Side Hustles

The other day as I was driving in my neighborhood, I saw an ad offering services to install Christmas lights.  First thought that popped into my mind was, “that’s a pretty good side hustle.”  This made me reflect how I’ve always had side hustles of my own.  At first, it was to make extra money but eventually it just became part of my lifestyle.  It’s a way for me to feed my creativity since my side hustle is Makeup Artistry.

For some households an extra $500.00 a month could make a huge impact to their lifestyle.  Sometimes the income from our jobs is just not enough and we catch ourselves living on a hamster wheel trying to make ends meet.  This year in particular has pushed everyone to their limits and has reminded us that we are all indispensable.

Many companies have had to reinvent their business models and found ways to create new streams of revenue for their businesses.  Why don’t we do the same? If this can provide an opportunity to change the economic state of our households, then why not? The key is to figure out what you will enjoy doing, because if you don’t, you might find yourself giving up before even starting.

Below are a few ideas for you to think about and stories of incredible Working Mamacitas who are killing it in the side hustle department.

Use your skillset - Sometimes you don’t have to look outside of your own skillset to make additional income.

One of my sisters built her career in Accounting and has a full-time job as a Controller.  She uses her knowledge in Accounting to offer Consulting Services to small businesses as her side hustle.  The business owners she works with trust her unconditionally and she has built up a loyal base who will keep her side hustle thriving for as long as she chooses to.

Another Working Mamacita I know is really good at crafts and calligraphy.  She started a business called Letters and Crafts by VO where she offers custom calligraphy invitations, stationary, stickers, and most recently has added vinyl decals to her list of growing products.  Some of her most popular items are custom tumblers and ornaments.  You could find all of her custom projects on her Instagram page - linked here. She has developed a fan base by taking chances, being creative and by putting her skills to good use.

A few other ideas for you to think about:

Are you a good cook? If so, how about a meal prep business? There are many people who are willing to invest in their health and what better way than eating healthy food. Or better yet, once kids go back to school, how about you meal prep for school lunches. As a parent, I would invest in this if I knew my child was going to eat a hearty, nutritious lunch.

Do you know how to sew? If so, how about you offer a service where you can resize hand me downs within families? Not only will people save money on clothes but you will also help reduce waste for the environment.

Do you think you could develop a side hustle with your skillset?  I am certain you can.

What’s your passion? - There is always an opportunity to profit from your passion.

Since I was a little girl my passion was to do makeup.  I remember booking my very first wedding makeup job when I was 18 years old.  I had never done makeup on anyone before but I packed all the makeup I owned (which was my personal kit) and took it with me.  Every women I made up that day had the same tone of foundation because it was the only one I owned and used it on everyone.  I laugh and cringe when I reflect on it now, but back then, it is all I had to work with and didn’t let it stop me. Since then, my makeup hustle thrived and I managed to stay busy until I had kids. I chose to slow down a bit once I became a Mamacita.

Throughout the years of doing makeup for weddings, I met many Working Mamacitas who found a way to profit from their passions.  Many targeted the wedding industry, and kept busy.  Some examples are Florists, Hair Stylists, Photographers, and Day of the Wedding Coordinators.  Although you will find many of them who have made these trades their careers, there are a few of us who had the opportunity to build successful side hustles as well.

Become a representative for a direct-selling companies - It will give you an opportunity to make money from home.

A direct selling company allows you to make money from your own home and sell items directly to consumers. It is not difficult to get involved in a direct selling company but I recommend you find one who offers products which most appeal to you. You will be selling them and should feel confident and enthusiastic about it.

A Working Mamacita I know is a representative for a direct selling company called Young Living. YL is a wellness company which produces the best essential oils in the world. When this Mamacita joined Young Living, it was to invest in her own wellness, learn to live a toxin free life, keep her family healthy and educate others along the way. She has grown to love her bottles of oily goodness and shares all about it on her Oils and Sol page. I love to screenshot all of her tips and oily recipes. Click here to learn more.
